Dunbarella was named by Newell (1938) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour P Djhu Sepkoski's reference number: 524].

It was reranked as Pterinopecten (Dunbarella) by Reed (1944).

It was assigned to Pterinopecten by Reed (1944); to Pterinopectinidae by Vokes (1980); to Pterinopectininae by Waterhouse (2001); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
