Liostrea was named by Douvillé (1904) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn J Tith-u Sepkoski's reference number: 93]. It is not extant. Its type is Ostrea sublamellosa.
It was assigned to Gryphaeinae by Vokes (1980); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); to Liostreinae by Bouchet et al. (2010); and to Ostreidae by Ronchetti (1970), Kelly (1984) and Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
