Schizobrissus was named by Pomel (1869). It is extant. Its type is Brissus cruciatus.

It was reranked as Meoma (Schizobrissus) by Fischer (1966).

It was assigned to Spatangoida by Sanchez Roig (1926); to Echinoidea by Durham (1961); and to Meoma by Fischer (1966).
