Palmoxytoma was named by Cox (1961) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett J Plie-u Sepkoski's reference number: 93]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Oxytoma (Palmoxytoma) by Cox (1961), Arp and Seppelt (2012).

It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); to Oxytoma by Cox (1961), Arp and Seppelt (2012); and to Oxytomidae by Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
