Taxonomy
Goniophora was named by Phillips (1848) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l P Leon]. Its type is Cypricardia cymbaeformis.

It was reranked as Sanguinolites (Goniophora) by Herrick (1888).

It was assigned to Sanguinolites by Herrick (1888); to Modiomorphinae by Liljedahl (1994); to Modiomorphoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Modiomorphidae by Cox et al. (1969), Vokes (1980) and Galli (2013).
