Modiolodon was named by Ulrich (1894) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-m O Ashg-m].

It was assigned to Modiomorphidae by Cox et al. (1969) and Vokes (1980); to Modiomorphinae by Liljedahl (1994); to Modiomorphoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Modiolodontidae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
