Whiteavesia was named by Ulrich (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l O Cara-u]. Its type is Modiolopsis cincinnatiensis.

It was assigned to Modiomorphidae by Cox et al. (1969); and to Modiomorphoida by Sepkoski (2002).
