Platypeltis was named by Fitzinger (1835). It is extant. Its type is Trionyx ferox.

It was reranked as Apalone (Platypeltis) by Meylan (1987) and Hutchison (1996).

It was assigned to Trionychidae by Yeh (1963); to Apalone by Meylan (1987) and Hutchison (1996); and to Trionychidae by Hay (1908), Hay (1930), Hutchison (1992) and Sukhanov (2000).
