It was recombined as Chelone mydas by Owen (1842); it was recombined as Mydasea mydas by Gervais (1843); it was misspelled as Euchelonia midas by Tschudi (1846); it was recombined as Chelonia mydas by Latreille (1802), Cope (1875), Hay (1930), Berry and Lynn (1936), Mrososky and Pritchard (1971), van Dijk et al. (2014) and Rhodin et al. (2017).
