Taxonomy
Microdytes tonnii was named by Simpson (1981). Its type specimen is MDLP 81-VI-26-1, a set of postcrania (tarsometatarsus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is South of Lake Colhue-Huapi (Colhuehuapian), which is in a Colhuehuapian marine horizon in the Patagonia Formation of Argentina. It is the type species of Microdytes.
It was misspelled as Eretiscus tonni by Acosta Hospitaleche and Tambussi (2008); it was recombined as Eretiscus tonnii by Olson (1986), Acosta Hospitaleche et al. (2004) and Tambussi et al. (2023).
