Ophioderma dentata was named by Kutscher (1988). Its type specimen is Holotype 1598/2, Kutscher collection and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Echinoderms, Upper Pliensbachian, Grimmen, which is in a Pliensbachian offshore claystone in Germany.
