Geosternbergia maiseyi was named by Kellner (2010). Its type specimen is KUVP 27821, a partial skull, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Edgemont area, which is in a Campanian/Campanian marine horizon in the Pierre Shale Formation of South Dakota.
