Taxonomy
Ammonites sphaerophyllus was named by Hauer (1851). It is the type species of Monophyllites.

It was recombined as Phylloceras sphaerophyllum by Mojsisovics (1869); it was recombined as Lytoceras sphaerophyllum by von Mojsisovics (1873); it was synonymized subjectively with Monophyllites wengensis by Shevyrev (1995); it was recombined as Monophyllites sphaerophyllus by von Mojsisovics (1882), Diener (1907), Ogilvie Gordon (1927), Spath (1934), Kummel (1960), Bando (1964), Bychkov et al. (1976), Silberling and Nichols (1982), Fantini Sestini (1994), Fantini Sestini (1996).
