Psephosthenaspis microspinosa was named by Fortey and Droser (1996) [Paratypes: cranidia, USNM 481329-30; librigena: USNM 481331-2; pygidium, USNM 481334]. Its type specimen is USNM 481333, a pygidium, and it is a 3D body fossil.
