Scaphonyx sanjuanensis was named by Sill (1970). Its type specimen is MACN 18185, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Hyperodapedon sanjuanensis by Langer et al. (2000), Mukherjee and Ray (2015).
