Schizostoma costata was named by Goldfuss (1844). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Porcellia costata by Koken (1896); it was recombined as Porcellia (Porcellia) costata by Blodgett and Johnson (1992); it was recombined as Agnesia costata by Bandel (1993); it was recombined as Paragnesia costata by Blodgett and Frýda (1999) and Wagner (2023).
