Miodontiscus was named by Dall (1903) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Venericardia (Miodontiscus) by Oldroyd (1925) and Itoigawa (1958); it was reranked as Cardita (Miodontiscus) by Schenck (1945).

It was assigned to Cardita by Schenck (1945); to Venericardia by Oldroyd (1925) and Itoigawa (1958); to Carditidae by Moore (1992); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
