Tribelesodon longobardicus was named by Bassani (1886). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Besano (MCSN Milan collection), which is in an Illyrian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal dolomite/shale in the Besano Formation of Italy.
It was recombined as Tanystropheus longobardicus by Bassani (1886), Kuhn (1971), Renesto (2005), Ezcurra (2016).
