Taxonomy
Athrotaxis was named by Don (1839). It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. It is the type genus of Athrotaxidoideae. It was considered monophyletic by Gadek et al. (2000).

It was assigned to Taxodieae by Knowlton (1919); to Taxodiaceae by Hill et al. (1993), Srinivasan (1995); to Athrotaxidoideae by Gadek et al. (2000); and to Cupressaceae by Christenhusz et al. (2011).
