Ischyrotomus littoralis was named by Wilson (1949). Its type locality is Tecolote Canyon (LACM 3243), which is in an Uintan terrestrial horizon in the Friars Formation of California.
It was recombined as Pseudotomus littoralis by Dunn and Rasmussen (2007).
