Petalodontia was named by Pocta (1889) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-l K Ceno]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Monopleura (Petalodontia) by Douville (1918).

It was assigned to Monopleura by Douville (1918); to Hippuritoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Monopleuridae by Skelton (2013).
