Spirigera oxycolpos was named by Emmrich (1853).

It was recombined as Oxycolpella oxycolpos by Dagys (1963), Dagys (1974), Jin et al. (1976), Jin and Fang (1977), Pearson (1977), Xu (1978), Grunt (1986), Iordan (1993), Siblik (1998).
