Strabops was named by Beecher (1901) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-l Cm Fran Sepkoski's reference number: 1006]. It is the type genus of Strabopidae.
It was assigned to Merostomata by Bengtson (1992), Sepkoski (2002); to Strabopida by Hou and Bergström (1997), Ortega-Hernández et al. (2010); and to Strabopidae by Størmer (1955), Ortega-Hernandez et al. (2013).
