Sanctacaris was named by Briggs and Collins (1988) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-l Sepkoski's reference number: 804]. Its type is Sanctacaris uncata.

It was assigned to Merostomata by Sepkoski (2002); to Arachnomorpha by Briggs et al. (2008); and to Chelicerata by Dunlop et al. (2020).
