Brachyopterella was named by Kjellesvig-Waering (1966) [Sepkoski's age data: S Prid Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Stylonurus pentagonalis. It is the type genus of Brachyopterellidae.
It was corrected as Brachopterella by Sepkoski (2002).
It was assigned to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); to Rhenopteridae by Lamsdell et al. (2010), Dunlop et al. (2020); and to Brachyopterellidae by Lamsdell (2025).
