Grossopterus was named by Størmer (1934) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg-u Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Hughmilleriidae by Størmer (1955); to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); to Waeringopteroidea by Dunlop et al. (2020); and to Waeringopteridae by Lamsdell (2025).
