Taxonomy
Waeringopterus was named by Leutze (1961) [Sepkoski's age data: S Prid D Gedi Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Waeringopteridae.

It was assigned to Hughmilleriidae by Leutze (1961); to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); to Waeringopteroidea by Dunlop et al. (2013), Dunlop et al. (2020); and to Waeringopteridae by Lamsdell (2025).
