Murex aquitanicus was named by Grateloup (1833). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Murex (Chicoreus) aquitanicus by Glibert (1952); it was recombined as Chicoreus (Chicoreus) aquitanicus by Moths et al. (2010).
