Mimetaster was named by Gürich (1931) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l]. Its type is Mimetaster hexagonalis. It is the type genus of Mimetasteridae.
It was assigned to Mimetasterida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mimetasteridae by Birenheide (1971), Legg (2015).
