Oonocarcinus was named by Gemmellaro (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-u Tr u]. Its type is Oonocarcinus insignis.

It was assigned to Cyclida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hemitrochiscidae by Glaessner (1969), Schweitzer et al. (2020) and Schram and Koenemann (2021).
