Callitris was named by Ventenat (1808). It is extant. It is the type genus of Callitroideae.

It was assigned to Cupressineae by Ettinghausen (1880); to Cupressineae by Knowlton (1919); to Cupressaceae by Jordan (1995); and to Callitroideae by Gadek et al. (2000).
