Taxonomy
Palaeospiza was named by Allen (1878). Its type is Palaeospiza bella. It is the type genus of Palaeospizidae. It was considered monophyletic by Ksepka and Clarke (2009).
It was assigned to Fringillidae by Hay (1902); to Palaeospizidae by Hay (1930), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956) and Wetmore (1960); to Coliiformes by Ksepka and Clarke (2009); and to Coliidae by Mayr (2022).
