Cotalagnostus was named by Whitehouse (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm uMid-l Cm uMid-u]. Its type is Agnostus lens.

It was assigned to Spinagnostidae by Whittington et al. (1997); to Agnostida by Sepkoski (2002); to Peronopsidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Spinagnostiidae by Landing et al. (2008).
