Pissarrachampsinae was named by Montefeltro et al. (2011). It was considered monophyletic by Montefeltro et al. (2011).

It was reranked as the unranked clade Pissarrachampsinae by Darlim et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Baurusuchidae by Montefeltro et al. (2011), Marinho et al. (2013), Godoy et al. (2014), Godoy et al. (2016); and to Baurusuchidae by Darlim et al. (2021).
