Stegocoelia (Hypergonia) jonathanensis was named by Hoare (2004) [Stegocoelia (Hypergonia?) jonathanensis
= Murchisonia vermicula Morse 1911 p. 409 f. 32a-b]. Its type specimen is OSU 12214, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Exposure in railroad cut along Jonathan Creek, which is in a Chesterian/Brigantian carbonate limestone/shale in the Maxville Limestone Formation of Ohio.
