Aulacoparia was named by Hintze and Jaanusson (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u O Aren-l Sepkoski's reference number: 795]. Its type is Asaphellus venta.

It was assigned to Asaphidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002).
