Illaenopsis was named by Salter (1865) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l O Llvi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 378]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Illaenidae by Raymond (1916); to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Nileidae by Harrington and Leanza (1957), Jell and Adrain (2002).
