Kainella was named by Walcott (1925) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l O Aren]. Its type is Hungaia billingsi.

It was assigned to Richardsonellinae by Harrington and Leanza (1957); to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Remopleurididae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
