Polyacrodus ritchiei was named by Johnson (1981). Its type specimen is SMP-SMU 64555, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rattlesnake Canyon RC, which is in an Artinskian marine horizon in the Admiral Formation of Texas.
