Lachnostoma was named by Ross (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l Sepkoski's reference number: 795]. Its type is Lachnostoma latucelsum.

It was assigned to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Asaphidae by Jell and Adrain (2002), Fortey and Bruton (2013).
