Merlinia was named by Fortey and Owens (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l Sepkoski's reference number: 378]. Its type is Merlinia rhyakos.

It was assigned to Ogygiocaridinae by Fortey and Owens (1978); to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Asaphidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
