Promegalaspides was named by Westergård (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Fran-u Sepkoski's reference number: 81,459]. It is not extant. Its type is Promegalaspides kinnekullensis.

It was assigned to Promegalaspidinae by Hoel (1999); to Asaphidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002).
