Pseudoptyocephalus was named by Legg (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 565]. Its type is Pseudoptyocephalus spinosus.

It was assigned to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Asaphidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
