Burlingia was named by Walcott (1908) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 80]. It is the type genus of Burlingiidae.

It was assigned to Burlingiidae by Walcott (1908); and to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002).
