Ellipsostrenua was named by Kautsky (1945) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm lMid Sepkoski's reference number: 473]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); to Ellipsocephalidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ellipsocephalinae by Cederström et al. (2022).
