Illaenus punctatus was named by Raymond (1905). Its type specimen is CM 1278, an exoskeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Nanillaenus punctatus by Shaw (1968); it was recombined as Thaleops punctata by Amati and Westrop (2004).
