Hyperbolochilus was named by Ross (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u Sepkoski's reference number: 795].

It was synonymized subjectively with Hillyardina by Boyce (1989).

It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); to Hystricuridae by Jell and Adrain (2002), Adrain et al. (2003); and to Hillyardininae by Adrain and Westrop (2007).
