Taxonomy
Amphitherium prevostii was named by von Meyer (1832). Its type specimen is OUMNH specimen, a mandible (partial left mandible), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Stonesfield Slate quarries, which is in a Bathonian marginal marine sandstone in the Taynton Limestone Formation of the United Kingdom.

Synonyms
  • Amphitylus oweni was named by Osborn (1888). Its type specimen is Oxford University Museum (OUMNH) specimen, a mandible (right mandible), and it is a 3D body fossil.

    It was recombined as Amphitherium oweni by Goodrich (1894); it was synonymized subjectively with Amphitherium prevostii by Simpson (1928).
