Taxonomy
Hamiltonichthys mapesi was named by Maisey (1989). Its type specimen is KUVP 86308 and is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Hamilton Quarry (Hartford Limestone), which is in a Gzhelian carbonate limestone in the Hartford Formation of Kansas. It is the type species of Hamiltonichthys.
