Cheiracanthus was named by Agassiz (1835). It is the type genus of Cheiracanthidae.
It was assigned to Acanthodii by Owen (1859); to Acanthoessidae by Hay (1902), Jordan (1963); to Acanthodidae by Woodward (1891), Denison (1979); and to Cheiracanthidae by van der Laan (2019).
